Are we exiting the darkness of the cave's interior, or leaving the natural elements of the outside world behind? Are we hiding, or looking for a way out? The curiosity inherent in a cave leaves us wondering not only what wonders can we see deeper in, but also what is really out there.
In this series, caves (both man-made and created by nature) are approached from the inside out in vivid oils and dense black. The man-made mining caves of the Sierra Mountain foothills leave us pondering the potential effects and obvious consequences of human interaction in the natural world, stimulating the viewer to ponder both. The natural caves remind us of the beauty that can be found in dark quiet spaces.
