Less than an hour from my home is a state park that is a monument to the destruction caused by the placer miners. This park, "Malakoff Diggins" shows us some of what we could do with limited technology and just sheer mechanical engineering capability. However, in doing so, we also created some very quiet caverns that bring the natural world in direct contact with the world that is built with destruction in mind. This painting is the end of a drainage tunnel that was designed as a method to let water out of the gold mining area. What seems to be so peaceful today was a roaring torrent when the mine was in operation.
